Need for Speed: Most Wanted is an open world racing game that seamlessly combines these two genres. While racing is the primary genre here, you also get a city to explore while you're not racing. There are numerous tracks and obstacles that make the races even more intense.

Open World

Need for Speed: Most Wanted has a large open city for you to explore called Fairhaven. This city is big and there are many things you can do. Some streets are wide and easy to drive through while others are winding and make you turn back and forth. You can even do some huge jumps off ramps. You'll notice some architecture is beautiful and regal while other buildings are dirty and in disrepair. The city is sectioned off into different districts like a real city. There's the lovely beach along with a business district and industrial zone. Understanding the city will help you quickly win your races.

The city is host of all the races. While some elements might change during races, like new obstacles appearing or ramps coming out of nowhere, the street itself is largely the same. That's why knowing the city is so important. You'll know what's coming up and where the shortcuts are.

Lack of Realism

While the open city is a wonderful idea, some players might find the city very odd. This is due to the complete lack of people. Unlike other open world games that are hosted in cities, there's no one walking around. There aren't even that many cars driving at the same time. All the architecture is there, but the city is otherwise dead and desolate.

You can talk to some other people by going to their shop and paying for upgrades or new cars, but otherwise there is no one here to interact with. It might come off as a little strange to some players. At the same time, this makes it easier to navigate around the city since you don't have to worry about hitting into people.

Numerous Cars

There are many different cars here and each one controls differently. Some have lots of power and speed while others excel and handling and sharp turns. You will gain new cars by playing as some are gifted to you while others can be bought with your earnings from races. You can also upgrade the cars to improve their performance, speed, handling and more.

Knowing how to use each car is the key to winning. Some tracks are best with lightweight cars that easily accelerate while others might require a heavy vehicle that can take some hits. It's all about knowing the race and which car is right for it.

Several Game Modes

This game features four different game modes to enjoy. Speed Runs are conventional races where you go from the starting point to the finish line. These are good if you just want a regular race without too much getting in the way. Sprint Races and Circuit Races are two similar game modes. These two modes allow you to race on generated tracks. The difference is that Sprint Races are just one lap with Circuit Races require several laps. The last game mode is Ambush Races. You'll be racing against the police as they try to catch you. Escape or be arrested.

Every mode also features Most Wanted Races. These are fast races against computer-controlled rivals. The police are waiting to catch you in these races and you need to beat your rival while avoiding arrest. Not only that, but you'll win the rival's car if you place near the top. These are often considered the best races because they're fast and you gain a lot if you win.

Get behind the wheel of some of the fastest cars in the world, staying away from police cars and completing challenges at the same time.

Need For Speed is a game where you're in control of the vehicle you purchase. You have to start with a basic car, but there are opportunities to change features to make it faster and to make it handle better. Your cars are kept in a personal garage, and you can change between cars at any time during the game. When you start playing, you can drive around the city to get a feel for where the streets are located and where some of the obstacles might be located. There are events at various points in the city where you can drag race, race a circuit or drift. If you win the event, then you earn money to upgrade your car.

There is also an option to play the game to see if you can out-drive police officers. Be careful because they can catch up with you rather quickly and can out stop strips on the road. Your goal is to drive faster than the police cars, which is possible if you upgrade your car enough or find side streets to drive on where you get lost from the officers. A map in the corner of the screen shows where you're located and where the officers are located. Another way to play the game is as the police officer. This is perhaps the best way to play the game if you're looking for a challenge. You have to know how to maneuver your vehicle to pin the other car in place and be able to handle your vehicle while racing on the streets to catch up with the car you're chasing.
